Like each year, this year again Deloitte has issued their report on tracking the trends,  a survey report based on responses proposed from Deloitte member firms and mining professionals. This report takes a look at the issues that miners will face in 2016. The most important message of this report is general acceptance of need of Innovation in Mining.  Report strongly recommend  need to innovate and not just within organization but emphasis is to engage outside world and learn from other industries.

“It’s interesting times in the mining industry; more interesting than many of us expected. China’s economic rebalancing is causing exceptional disruption. Commodity prices are taking much longer to recover than anticipated. To my mind, this makes innovation even more imperative. Rather than being optional, being bold may be the prerequisite to survival.” Glenn Ives, Americas Mining Leader, Deloitte Canada

We have seen mining companies are quick to adopt innovation that brings operational improvements but focus should also be needed to shift towards innovation that is aiming for future mining and sustainable earth. This can only be achieved by collaborating at bigger level, sharing information more openly with stakeholders involved, re looking concept of social license to operate and bringing direct input from public side, and most importantly leveraging existing technology.

In the year, when trend looks like obviously will be shifting towards open innovation and industry collaboration, in our coming posts we will be exploring readiness of mining Industry for open innovation, existing innovation ecosystem, and understanding of innovation at large across the mining sector and how it can be improved.
